Morning glories come in different colors, sizes, and bloom times, and mixing and matching a few different varieties can make your garden even more bewitching!
- ‘Heavenly Blue’ are the classic morning glories with rich azure flowers and white throats. These plants climb to 12 feet.
- ‘Scarlett O’Hara’ has bright red flowers with a white throat. It climbs to 15 feet.
- Moonflowers are a night-blooming variety of morning glory with big trumpet-shaped, white blooms that moths and other nocturnal pollinators can’t resist!

Hey y’all, I am new to owning and caring for MG’s so I am In need of some pointers. I started the seeds in planters after soaking them for 24hours. They have started to sprout at what point can I move them to the ground?
I bought a packet of seeds, but there were no instructions to soak the seeds first and I just planted them in full sun next to my fence. Soil is good and well drained, etc. The shoots have come up and they are about 3 inches tall now, but haven't done much else. It's been about 3 weeks since planting. How long before they really start growing and producing blooms? Would not soaking the seeds first affect them?
Oddly enough---they say morning glory plants are annual BUT I have been growing them for over 12 years and they reseed themselves.
I started them on a trellis and they adapted to the southern ground---by late summer they were a mass of purple ground cover. I picked off the seed pods...and the next spring I literally threw them on the ground/ no soaking or cutting the pods? Sometimes something ate and pooped them out---so I had morning glory plants ALL over my yard. When I cut the grass, I would cut around the plants. I LOVE the morning glory awesome.
Hi Nancy!,
I saw where you said they reseed themselves. What zone are you in? I'm in middle TN (zone 7a) and I'm considering planting them along my fence but I'm afraid I'll have to replant them every year! Your post was very helpful!!
Thank you!!!
Samantha T.
We are in Western Ky, and I've never had a problem with reseeding either Morning Glories or Moonflowers either one. (We're Zone 6B)
They re-seed themselves easily, almost too easily in fact, Trying to keep them in one location is not easy, lol.
Our back porch is covered with them, and I don't give them hardly any love, and they thrive. Just like other useful herbs like chickory and evening primrose, they seem to do better with less attention.
HI Candy, I planted seeds indoors and did not soak the seeds prior. I did not read that on the packet either. They are about 3 to 4 inches in growth. Just waiting to plant outside. I have been reading that they will begin to bloom in late summer to September sometime. Good luck..... I'm excited to see the blooms!!
My son and I planted some last 6 days ago inside... they are 2" almost 3" tall already!!
I soak my mg seeds overnite before putting them in a mix of seed starting potting starter mix and potting soil. it is amazing to me that you can almost watch them grow daily...the little leaves pushed thru a couple of days later..and I know I will have blooms and have my trellis already, just like last year..I live in an apt in new mexico and have my mg. roses and kitchen herbs. maevelous...when I lived in California my mgs grew like crazy. I love them...and they love water and sun.
Morning glory seeds are not toxic...
They might cause nausea and mild visual hallucinations but this is when you eat like a 100 of them, but they certainly wont kill you neither will the minor hallucinations you experience either.
