Growing a Pizza Garden

Subhead

Grow pizza ingredients in your backyard!

February 9 is National Pizza Day! A pizza-themed garden bed is a fun way to grow your favorite vegetables—and also makes an excellent project for kids. This garden plan includes the ingredients for pizza toppings and is actually pizza-shape itself!

A recipe-themed garden bed is such a great way to introduce kids to the excitement of growing the food that will end up on their plates and, hopefully, in their bellies!

What to Grow in a Pizza Garden?

Every pizza ‘slice’ is filled with one of your favorite toppings. How many slices you need depends on how varied you and your family’s appetite for different pizza toppings is!

  • Of course, any pizza garden plan needs to include tomatoes—essential for making into paste and slathering on any pizza!
  • Then add your favorite toppings. Our personal must-haves are chilies, oregano and basil, but others may prefer onions, spinach or garlic!

It’s just a shame you can’t grow your own cheese—planning space for a milking cow could be taking it too far!

See free Plant Growing Guides for growing tomatoes, herbs, and vegetables

To make it easy to position plants in their slices of the pizza, you can also sub-divide it into beds using strips of wood or another material. Watch the video above to learn more and see how it’s done!

Tomato Pizza Pie Garden

Janice Stillman, Editor of The Old Farmer’s Almanac, decided to just plant tomatoes, but planted in a pizza pie shape in which each tomato plant sits on the edge of a slice. Growing tomatoes in a circle is as easy as pie! See her video below.

And of course, we have lots of great pizza recipes to offer. Try a simple Pizza Margherita and here’s a simple recipe for homemade pizza dough, too!
