How to Read Long-Range Weather Forecasts

Long-range predictions show weather trends in temperatures and precipitation. For example, will the winter be colder or warmer than average? Winter will be colder than normal, with below-normal precipitation. The coldest periods will be in mid-December, from late December into early January, in mid- and late January, and in early to mid-February. Snowfall will be below normal in the north and above normal in the south, with the snowiest periods in mid- to late November and early to mid- and late March.

April and May will be colder and drier than normal, with below-normal snowfall. The snowiest periods will be in early and mid-April.

Summer will be drier and slightly cooler than normal, with the warmest temperatures in mid-June, mid-July, and mid-August.

September and October will be colder than normal. Precipitation and snowfall will be below normal in the north and near to above normal in the south, with the snowiest periods in early and mid-October.
