If you’ve always assumed the Dog Days of Summer were named for hot, tired dogs, you’re in good company. The real story is stranger—and much more interesting. The name comes from Sirius, the Dog Star. Traditionally, the Dog Days of Summer run from July 3 through August 11.
Why Are They Called the Dog Days?
The “dog” is Sirius, the brightest star in Canis Major, the “Greater Dog.” Ancient skywatchers noticed Sirius returning to the dawn sky during midsummer, close to the hottest part of the year.
Because Sirius appeared near the Sun during this sweltering season, Greek and Roman observers linked the star with summer heat. The Greek name Seirios has traditionally been interpreted as “scorching” or “the scorcher.”
Sirius was blameless, as it turns out, but the association endured.
Sirius Had a Bigger Role in Ancient Egypt
Along the Nile, Sirius had a far more practical significance.
Ancient Egyptians knew the star as Sopdet, later called Sothis by the Greeks. Its return to the dawn sky came around the time of the annual Nile flood, an event central to farming and the seasonal calendar.
Sirius became an important marker of the year and helped signal the Egyptian New Year. Long before printed calendars, people were using the sky to track the seasons.
Does Sirius Really Make Summer Hotter?
No. The timing is coincidence, not cause.
Summer heat comes from Earth’s tilt. During Northern Hemisphere summer, our half of the planet tilts toward the Sun, giving us longer days and more direct sunlight.
Sirius simply happened to appear at the right time of year to receive the blame.
Dog Days Folklore
The Dog Days developed a gloomy reputation in Greece and Rome, where they became associated with heat, drought, illness, and difficult weather.
One old Almanac weather rhyme puts it this way:
Dog Days bright and clear
Indicate a happy year;
But when accompanied by rain,
For better times, our hopes are vain.
Why Do We Still Say “Dog Days”?
Somewhere along the way, most people forgot the connection to Sirius. The phrase survived anyway, becoming shorthand for the sultry heart of summer.
But traditionally, the Dog Days refer to that specific 40-day period from July 3 through August 11—not simply any unusually hot spell.
So the next time someone uses “Dog Days” to mean any hot stretch of summer, you’ll know there’s a little more to the story.
And the dog in question is about 8.6 light-years away.
Make the Most of the Dog Days
Make a glass of Dog-Days Iced Tea, find some shade, or get up early enough to watch for Sirius returning to the dawn sky.
Ancient skywatching optional. Cold drink strongly encouraged.
