I threw out nearly everything. Then I vacuumed them up, washed shelves, sprayed with vinegar. I was sure I got them all. I bought sealed containers, new food supplies, etc. I also bought Dr. Killigans pantry moth traps & placed them in the pantry & elsewhere just in case there were any other strays around. They work great, but are full & driving me crazy. I cannot figure out how they are still multiplying. Ready to pull my hair out! Did you ever get rid of yours. It has been several months since complete cleaning & I don’t think they ever will be gone!🙄
Ours started in a box of Stevia! We had bought it ahead, and when the one in use was empty, I went to the back of the pantry and found that the new box was just riddled with worms. Ever since then --3+ months-- I have been killing 2 to 25 daily. The cupboards have been cleaned, the birdseed now in the unattached garage. They still keep coming. I thought that if I killed them as fast as I see them, I would eventually win. So far I am not winning; they just keep coming in small numbers daily.
We have a small alcove with a shelf between the kitchen and family room. I started to collect each moth I kill in a paper towel, thinking that the pheromones from the dead bugs would attract others. I works. Every time I go from one room to the other, I look around and find them on the woodwork, ceiling, walls, or shelf. There they get squashed to attract new moths. I use a new paper every day and keep only 2 or 3 on the shelf. Nine out of every 10 that I kill now are in the alcove. Still, they are coming; so I'm not winning --yet!
Clean everything. Like every square inch of the kitchen, including spraying in the cracks. I had them for over a year & to finally get rid of them, I had to toss all my grains and spices- anything not in an airtight container (which was a lot of stuff). I sprayed and scrubbed inside every cabinet and then put traps out. I was shocked by the number of moths the traps caught after the deep cleaning I did. But I finally got rid of them!
What did you spray with please? And did you spray the ceilings in addition to wall, cabinets, etc?
I've been fighting them for 6 months! The traps work great but you need to find their source! I found a worm in the rim of an as yet not opened jelly jar! They had not gotten into the jelly but we're in the rim!! So you have to check EVERY package, jar, box, etc. to wipe them out! They can come in on fabric, cereal, flour, grain products, any dry food products. Good luck. I'm still waging war on the moths. Check fabric napkins, table runners, everything!
The pheromone traps really work! You’ll probably have to use them for a couple years after cleaning because the larvae can get into crevices you don’t see. Just keep atit!
I had pantry moths last Fall - threw away everything, took all the shelves and brackets off washed everything with bieach, sprayed poison in all the brackets, invested in air tight containers to store everything. I literally don’t put any boxes or bags in cupboards. I put rice and pasta in the freezer when I bring it home for a week before dumping it in air tight container. I washed every can and jar. I put peppermint oil in the pantry with traps. Went 6 months with not one moth and all of sudden killed one. Checked my trap and 3 more dead ones in there. Do these things hibernate somewhere? Will they ever be eradicated?
Thanks for the great tips. Check in the spaces in the corners of your cabinets, between the banks of cabinets! That's where I found them breading! There were no food items there, just a quiet, protected space. Do bay leaves really deter them?
You need to find exactly WHAT they are eating. This may include different things, as all stages of the pests may be feeding on multiple products. The first and most obvious place to start is the kitchen. It sounds like you have a good start there; next, bathroom and closets. This could get tricky, as the larva can feed on starch alone. Be patient and diligent, and continue to remove any larvae or adults you find. When you find out what they are eating, REMOVE it completely from your home, then address air-tight ways of storing and using that product. You may have to rethink how things are stored around the house. Don’t give up!
Larva were pupating in the pre-drilled holes for the shelves in the cabinets. I had to pick each one out with tweezers. Check the holes with a flashlight
