Basically, there are three types of blackberries:
- Erect thorny blackberries
- Erect thornless blackberries
- Trailing thornless blackberries
Erect blackberries are bushes that support themselves, while the trailing blackberries have long canes that must be trellised for support.
I was given thornless blackberries this year and planted them with trellis'. Now they have grown taller than the trellis and I wonder if cutting them off so they don't grow any taller and hopefully encouraging new growth from the bottom is the proper way to care for them.
Thank you for a wonderful newsletter.

Yes, tip them back at just 2-3" above the trellis wire. This will encourage lateral branching. Once the lateral branching reaches the next plant cut it back about 6", the shoots that form from these laterals will contain next seasons berries. Either late this season or early in the spring once the shoots reach 12" cut them back to no more than 8-10". I would remove any leaves on the bottom 16" of the cane. They will not develop much fruit and they take energy from the cane and also invite disease via splash up from rain water, etc.
