The tall bearded irises, Iris germanica, come in many flamboyant colors. They are generally planted in the fall. Rebloomers (remontant) varieties include:
- ‘Immortality’: fragrant white flowers that appear in early summer and again in late summer; hardy to Zone 4
- ‘Feed Back’: fragrant dark purple flowers; Zones 4 to 9
- ‘Earl of Essex’: white flowers, with purple edging; Zones 3 to 10
- ‘Jennifer Rebecca’: mauve pink flowers; Zones 4 to 9

Siberian irises, I. sibirica, also come in a range of colors. They have a more delicate beauty than the stately bearded irises, but are equally as rugged. They also tend to be more pest and disease resistant.
- ‘Blueberry Fair’: ruffled blue flowers; Zones 3 to 8
- ‘Fond Kiss’: white flowers with pink flush; Zones 3 to 8

Japanese irises, I. ensata, bear huge, flat blooms. These heavy feeders thrive on moisture during the growing season and do well around ponds; move to drier ground for fall and winter.
- ‘Coho’: pink flowers with golden flush; Zones 4 to 9
- ‘Variegata’: dark purple-reddish flowers; Zones 4 to 9

I just love Irises! They remind me of my grandma who took special care of hers. She had a variety that grew 4-5 feet tall. She dug them up every fall and planted them again in the early spring (I'm not sure why she did this, we didn't live in a harsh climate). My first landlord cultivated Irises for competition and created several new colors. These are the best smelling flowers; not too perfumey or over powering, just a nice clean fresh scent.
We live in Tucson. AZ. I was given a 6"-8" pot with Iris. Today 4/5/2022 hi temp will be about 90 degrees only to climb in the weeks to come. (105 maybe). What do I do to save these wonderful plants.
Water deep once a month. I too love in Tucson mine are under tree . I didn't plant them there was there when we bought house. I fertilize in spring after bloom with low nitrogen fertilizer like 6-8-8. Than again after Labor Day. We have been here 25 years so I just think them out for first time. They weren't flowing well . Hope to have more blooms in March .Mine do well even in cold weather without protection but you can cut out anything that does get damage..They seem very hardy ,no diseases or pest.Good lucky with yours.
I’m a lay gardener but if you want them out of the pot and in the ground to put a half inch of sand on them for drainage then mulch on top of that to keep your daily watering moisture in might work. I have a lot of iris but the desert and high temperatures do give you a challenge. I hope this works. The other option is to keep them inside in their pot.
In the summer of 2020 a neighbor divided her iris and have away several of them, i was lucky to get 10 bulbs immediately according to her suggestions I planted them, nothing happens until the beginning of this week to my surprise 2 bloomed this is the beginning of December, I live in California ( San Leandro) is this normal?
I am really glad that I read about the growth of Iris, the depth and that some rebloom. Thanks. I learned a lot
I have a friend who has Irises in her yard - yet she has no idea how they got there. I explained the the plant would have to be planted with a bulb. She's been living in that house for over 60 years, but has no idea how the flowering plant got there.
Any ideas. I might add that there is Japanese Knotweed also growing in that same area.
Thank You
I recently hired someone to come do a yard clean up and now after I broke my ankle and was unable to do any yardwork for several weeks. I was at work when he was working. When I got home, I found that all of my plants, irises included, had been taken down to the ground. I'm now worried that my several varieties of irises won't come back next year.
Has anyone experienced anything like this? Or have any words of hope for me?
I had some irises at the last house I lived at that got mowed down each of the first 4 years I was there. They kept coming back, that's when I let them grow and learned they were beautiful irises.
Since then I always have irises. From what I've learned about growing them they will always come back as long as the this one is present and not damaged.
