How to Plant, Grow, and Care for Marigold Flowers
The flowers of Tagetes marigolds are NOT edible, but those of Calendula are. The bright petals of Calendula add color and a spicy tang to salads and other summer dishes.
- The flower petals are sometimes cooked with rice to impart saffron’s color (but, unfortunately, not flavor).

I have marigolds growing in clay pots, they have a lot of foliage but no blooms. That happened last year too. they get full sun most of the day, i water them once a day at the base of stems. what should I do to get blooms? Thank you for your answer.
It sounds like your marigolds are getting enough sun and water. It might be that they are getting too much nitrogen, which can encourage lots of foliage but discourage flowering.
HI!
I live in Central Florida. I bought a potted marigold plant last fall, and since we have pretty mild winters here, the plant lasted through the winter. This spring and early summer this plant has had a big growth spurt. It's very tall and leggy, and on very hot days it starts to wilt, so I am watering it every day due to the intense heat. I'd like to prune it so that the water doesn't have so far to travel to nourish it. Is pruning recommended?
I collected my marigold seeds in april. Will they grow if I plant them? I live in montana
It’s certainly worth a try! Whether they will grow will depend on several factors. Did you collect them this month (April)? Or, from last April, and stored over winter? In either case, if they were harvested at the right time and prepared and stored properly, and the seeds didn’t rot or mold, they likely will sprout fine. If you collected from hybrid plants, the offspring may not have the same characteristics of the parents. Good luck!
I received Marigold seeds for Christmas. I went ahead and put them in the soil for the remainder of the winter. Will they still bloom the spring?
i want to grow marigold flower for commercial purpose on my 2 acres land but the water available here is saline , so i have a doubt whether i should continue cultivation ?
please suggest !!
Marigolds will grow in moderate saline soil although they may be shorter. In high saline soils, marigolds’ growth will be affected, especially quantity and quality of bloom.
I have a question? Will a marigold flower still grow and bloom if the head of the sprout was pulled off? We had our kids plant flowers in pots they painted. One of the sprouts still had the seed case on it. My eldest daughter tried to pull it off and and a little bit of the top came off with it. Now my other daughter is distraught and worried that the plant is ruined??? I know marigolds are able to be dead headed after blooming. We explanted to them that the seed case would have fallen off on its own. Apologies have been said, forgiveness given. Is there anything I can do to help this plant?
Since the seed case was still on, I’m guessing that the seedling was only about an inch or so tall? Does it have any of the cotyledons (baby leaves) on it left, or any true leaves? If so, then it may recover. If not, then wait to see if any new leaves form—keep caring for the seedling as you would normally. If in a week or two leaves form, or there are signs of further growth, then the plant might be OK. If the plant does not form any leaves, however, which help it to make food, or there are signs of decline, then unfortunately you’ll need to start over.
