How to Properly Display the American Flag

Hi, Chris: The elderly don't get a pass in these matters, but they do get more than a modicum of understanding from us all for having led the way in so many other ways. By the way, sometimes a local Scout group will take on flag-raising/-lowering as an ongoing service project. Similarly, a local Legion or VFW can sometimes provide financial help for installing lighting. Get the word out! Ninety-nine percent of the time, across the country, if it is made known that Old Glory is in need, patriots come out of the woodwork to help. Thanks for caring so much to ask!
Hi, Dorinda: Your instinct is correct. While the authority to officially declare half-staff has remained rather limited (president, governors, mayor of D.C., a few other circumstances), the general usage of the honor has expanded over time to include other people and purposes than the originally intended persons of high rank or station (plus any U.S. service member). The custom now is to declare it basically for whatever purpose the declarer wants, and it is notable that Congress has never forbidden or restricted this practice, so it sounds good to us! Thanks for being so patriotic to ask!

Hi, Mary Alice: Thank you very much for calling this to our attention. Unfortunately, we don't comment on unseen photos or, in any event, contact third parties. This being said, and that your understanding of flag placement is generally correct, it's important to remember that sometimes photo subjects aren't responsible for the settings in which they are photographed. Most important—as we have said here many times—it's almost always the thought that counts, and having Old Glory respectfully displayed in any placement is always better than not having her there at all. Thanks for being so patriotic to ask!
