How to Properly Display the American Flag

Hi, Jennifer: There are no detailed illumination guidelines, and you are correct in pointing out that indeed there are commercially made, solar-powered rings specifically made for flagpoles—and, in fact, these can do a good job of lighting Old Glory whether placed above or below her on the pole. This being said, it is generally believed that anything placed higher than Old Glory on the pole, other than the finial, which is meant to be the topping-off embellishment, can detract from the overall beauty of the installation in daytime. Thanks for caring so much to ask!
Hi, Gretchen: Thank you SO much for doing this! Actually, any small flag that is not going to touch the ground when mounted is appropriate. Similarly, there is no cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all for a dowel. Also, we do not know how high off the ground each holder sits. Plus, they might vary. So, the thing to do is to figure out what overall look you want, and try to make them all sort of the same. When hanging down, the bottoms of your flags should be about 6 to 8 inches off the ground, whether in holders or not, so just adjust each flag and its little staff accordingly—then you will have a very orderly, dignified, respectful look for the whole cemetery. If the flags you like come on 30-inch staffs, just cut them off or push them in further (uh, carefully!) to make the heights all match. Thanks for caring so much to ask!
Hi, again, Joan: If there are three flag stands in a straight line, then Old Glory would be in the middle only if her staff were taller than the other two. Otherwise, she would be at the far left when viewed by the audience. She could also be in the middle if the staffs were all the same height and her stand were moved out of line, closer to the audience. If you have two flags on the same level, equidistant from the audience and not on a stage or platform, then Old Glory would again be on the left when viewed by the audience. Interestingly, if there is an Old Glory onstage, she would be on the presenter's right, or audience's left. However, if there is no stage or if there is a stage with no flag and Old Glory stands on the floor of the room, she would be in the front right corner when viewed by the audience. Thanks for being so patriotic to ask, and also for reminding us to dip into the last of our Thin Mints that we keep in their box in the desk drawer. And thanks in advance for sending along that free replacement box. :)

Hi, Matthew: There are no set suggestions regarding the minimum separation required between Old Glory and a higher flag—particularly of another nation—on another pole, but we believe that most folks (including us) would feel that this is a little too close for comfort, no matter what the other flag is. Then again, the recognition of the need for significant separation is entirely voluntary, so you are certainly free to do what you wish. Thanks for asking!
