How to Properly Display the American Flag

The US police sometimes use a Thin Blue Line American Flag which is not red, white, and blue. The first time I saw it, I thought it was supporting anarchy or something bad (since the flag was mostly gray and blue). Does this violate proper etiquette?
I have my flag displayed on the outside of my front door hanging straight down, with stars on the left, I have a glass storm door covering it, a neighbor told me that means a military person inside died, never heard this before, I have highest respect for the flag, is this true??
Hi, Linda: This meaning is not an official one pertaining to Old Glory, although it's important to remember that there are many local and institutional customs that have been passed down through generations that mean no disrespect—we might call them "flaglore." Thanks for being so patriotic to ask!
Driving through Maine saw hundreds of American flags mounted on utility poles along the road, they are left out 24/7 in any weather, no lighting at night and they are faded Why are the people of Maine not honoring the flag code?
What if the flag being displayed on top of a motel has the bottom looking pretty ragged? Should it be replaced, retired?
I see several flags that are left to fly at night. I understand that they may be flown if they are illuminated. My observations are that the flagpole is illuminated, but not the flag.
What can be done about this.
Thank you

Hi, Betty: No, it is not. Thanks for caring so much to ask!
