How to Properly Display the American Flag

Hi, Scott: If we are understanding you correctly, this is OK to do. As you no doubt realize, "Old Glory" is our national flag, unmodified in any way, made of some sort of cloth or other fabric material, flying freely or mounted properly on a wall, for example. Once she is something else, such as in a work of art, she is no longer our flag but instead just that: a piece of flag art—to which, for example, you wouldn't pledge allegiance. If you are referring to a flag that meets the above criteria that is part of an art installation of some sort, that is OK, too. In the end, though, all uses of Old Glory are protected by the Freedom of Speech for which she stands, so it is really "anything goes." Thanks for being so patriotic to ask!

Hi, Patricia: If that's the best you can do, it will have to do. Yes, that's fine! As we always say, Old Glory flying not at her best is better than Old Glory not flying at all. Thanks for caring so much to ask!
