How to Properly Display the American Flag
More Like This
Hi, John: Thank you for your service as well as this question. Using an actual flag as clothes is frowned upon in a big way, but over the years the use of Old Glory's image on clothing and the like has proliferated because it is viewed as "flag art," which is protected as free speech. Thanks again!
Hi, Keith: You do—and we do—by helping to promote and publicize the right way to treat Old Glory. But the U.S. Flag Code is strictly voluntary, and there is no enforcement mechanism other than peer pressure and public opinion. The reason for this is that anyone's right to display Old Glory as they see fit is protected under Freedom of Speech. So, the more you and we can educate people, the better we hope our nation will be! Thanks for being so patriotic to ask!
Hi, Kathy: Well, our main critique is that you should be much commended for caring so much and taking the time to ask—thank you! Even an Old Glory in this position needs to be lit at night, though. We would look into some sort of solar-powered light(s), however small, which might be able to get the job done. You may even be able to find one or more that could clip (or be taped) onto your flag staff and shine down on it, however dimly. When it comes to doing right by Old Glory, there's no such thing as thinking too far outside the box to come up with a solution. Good luck, and thanks for asking!
