How to Properly Display the American Flag

There is nothing in the Flag Etiquette STANDARDS of RESPECT that indicates that hugging the flag is disrespectful. So long as the flag is on a staff to the right of and above the speaker. So long as it is not being dipped or lowered it must retain the highest position. So long as it doesn't touch the ground Those are the rules. Just stick to the rules. Many people tend to make things up because they don't read the rules and understand it ... this then can lead to false notions of flag handling and etiquette.
Very good post. I am dealing with a few of these issues as
well..

The "rules" actually say NOTHING is supposed to touch the flag. It's a bit embarrassing that people are commenting on an article they didn't read...or at least didn't comprehend. This is not an insult...there are LOTS of people commenting on "whether hugging is disrespectful", but you are not to use the flag in ADS, NAPKINS...MADE INTO CLOTHES??? When have we ever followed the "rules"?? But the people most upset about "how the flag is treated" are the biggest violaters... putting it on their cars, hats, shirts...4th of July EVERYTHING...which would be "wiping your bbq mouth with a flag"??
Anyways...hug a flag...drop it...burn it... IT'S CLOTH. WE are PEOPLE...why are we subservient to A PIECE OF CLOTH?? IT'S NOT UNPATRIOTIC Do we have "rules about the Cross"?? The star of David?? It's... it's stupid, to put it plainly... IT'S CLOTH...WITH INK..."but it symbolizes the COUNTRY!!" The country that stole a country from an indigenous people? Enslaved a race?? That's full of immigrants that don't want IMMIGRANTS MOVING HERE??
IT'S JUST STUPID! Feel how you want about my reply...if it doesn't show? I don't care what people think...but the rule is "nothing should touch the flag"...that includes PRESIDENTS.
In ACTUALITY THE EXACT STATEMENT IN REGARDS TO THIS IS...
The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise. THEREFORE THE COMMENT OF NOTHING TOUCHING IT IS INCORRECT.
I'm reasonably sure that "hugging" the flat in a blatant attempt to rally strong feelings in one's audience is a no-no - am I right?
No. Quit making things up because you have an irrational hatred for our President. You're grasping.
Hum much like inventing ideas that one cannot kneel before the flag during the National Anthem. Now that is a case of making things up. Fact is that flag etiquette specialists all agree that hugging the flag is not respecting it in any way, quite the opposite.
You gotta admit, it's still weird and creepy...
And most people's hatred of the current president is not irrational. He's a lying, cheating, bigoted excuse of a human being. He is not making our country stronger or safer. While it may not be against the code of etiquette to hug an American flag, it should be. It is political grandstanding at it's most childish.
Him hugging the flag was as creepy as when he attends any religious event or ends his speach saying "God Bless America". It's so fake and insulting it makes my skin crawl.
What about a flag that is made to look antique, such as the Betsey Ross flag? Do the rules apply to that, since it is no longer actually our flag? Or can it be used in artwork/decor? (I am thinking specifically of small flags or photos of flags in scrapbooking, or large flags draped or framed on walls.)
