WHAT SHOULD BE DONE WHEN SOMEONE HAS MADE A FLAG WITH 15 STRIPES ?
Hi, Amarmol: Excellent question! Actually, the Old Glory that flew over Fort McHenry, about which Francis Scott Key wrote "The Star-Spangled Banner," had 15 stars and 15 stripes, representing new states Vermont (1791) and Kentucky (1792). This was the only Stars and Stripes to carry 15, though, as folks soon realized that this addition of stripes thing could get out of hand pretty quickly. Thus the number of stripes was reverted back to the original 13, where it has been ever since. So, unless this is some sort of commemorative or historical flag, we have no clue as to what should be done. Maybe smile and shake our head? Thanks for asking!
Hello, I work at a public library and a patron noticed that we do not fly a flag and was wondering why. I honestly hadn't noticed until they pointed it out, and was wondering if public libraries are expected to fly the American Flag. We've consulted other libraries and gotten mixed answers on whether or not they fly a flag, so I would love some clarification from a flag expert!

Hi, Kathryn: This is an interesting question. It doesn't really matter if it's Holy Water or any other substance, and it's not so much about our flag being "desecrated" as it is about the fact that nothing, however holy or pure (e.g., distilled water), really should be applied to Old Glory except for cleaning purposes. This being said, there is no law or regulation prohibiting sprinkling Holy Water on the Stars and Stripes, so if a particular religion or organization or practice believes that applying water or smoke or ketchup to Old Glory is a respectful thing to do, who's to say that they are wrong? So, the answer to your question is that although what the priest was told is technically correct (except possibly for use of the word "desecrating"—"soiling" is more like it), in practice the sprinkling of Holy Water is entirely permissible. Thanks for caring so much to ask!
