How to Properly Display the American Flag

Hi, Barry: Old Glory and places of worship have a long, beautiful, and complicated relationship, solidly underpinned not only by Freedom of Religion but also by Freedom of Speech. The bottom line is that such sites can do whatever they like with any flags. In your case, as you face your beautiful church, you seem to have two sets of front doors, one at the left, set back, and another 25 feet away, to its right, more forward and prominent, which would appear to be the main doors. We understand you to say that your rector or vestry or whoever has chosen to put the church flag and rainbow flag alongside the right-hand, prominent doors. This makes sense, as many houses of worship choose to make a statement that this is a house of God, not of man (government). In such a situation, FWIW, the church flag should really be on the left side of the right-hand doors as you face them, as it is more institutional than the rainbow flag. This leaves Old Glory and the other flag to fly alongside the left-hand, set back doors, which also is fine, although Old Glory should be on the left as you face them. Ironically, this also produces an acceptable hierarchy when the four flags are viewed from the front as a whole row, with Old Glory at the far left and the other three to her right as you face them. Thanks for caring so much to ask!
Hi, Jimmy: This often depends on what the exact layout of the room is, but often a big or prominent fireplace is almost considered to be like a person or presentation facing the room, in which case it would be to your left, as you correctly describe would be the case with a flag to the speaker's right on a stage. Similarly, if you entered the restaurant and came upon Old Glory simply against a blank wall, then she should be to the right, as you surmise (although in the middle would also be OK, if she is the only flag). Whether Old Glory is on the same level or higher really doesn't enter into it—it's whether she is seen to more or less be presenting herself to you. Thanks for caring so much to ask!
