How to Properly Display the American Flag
More Like This
We have placed our new U.S. Flag on a lamp post in our front yard. The union (top of the 3x5 flag) is probably 7-8 feet off the ground at a 45 degree angle. But the bottom of the flag is only about 4 feet off the ground. Is this sufficient height above the ground? Also, the lamp post would light the flag at night. Are those two things following proper etiquette? Thank you.
I was recently visiting in PA and a Veteran gave me a small ziplock bag with a star and red and white strip that were cut from a flag. Is this legal to do to a flag? It is was from StarsForOurTroops.org
Is it legal to design, make, and publicly display an American flag where the red and white stripes have been redesigned using the "pride" rainbow colors instead of the original design of red and white stripes? I am recently seeing the American flag with rainbow colors instead of the red and white stripes, and I am wondering if this practice can be legally challenged as a code violation regarding the displaying of the Flag. Thank you.
Hi, John and Melanie: Once Old Glory has had her colors changed, she is no longer our nation's flag but simply a piece of "flag art," which is protected by Freedom of Speech. The U.S. Flag Code is advisory in nature, so no legal challenge could be mounted even if such actions weren't protected by the Constitution. And the blue union of Old Glory should always be at the upper left, regardless of type of flag or how it is flown/mounted. Thanks for caring so much to ask!
When hanging the US flag in a garden on a garden flag holder in the horizontal position , should the Union be in the top left corner or the top right corner. Two flags in our neighborhood the Union in the top right corner on a garden flag holder. I sways thought the Union was top left corner no matter how it is hanging. It’s bothering me so I will await your response thanks so much
The U.S. Flag Code does not specify the colors of the U.S. Flag ( Or I haven't found that spec yet) since everyone assumes it would be Red, White and Blue . Period . BUT - the Flag has been presented in all sorts of colors - think of the NYPD and NYFD Flags ( Single Blue or Red stripe , all else being black and white )
. The Authors presumed that common sense and good taste would limit the colors the the classic red, white , blue . Sadly this is not the case , and the Rainbow flag is just the latest assault on good taste ( MY opinion ). Nor should the U.S. flag be printed on disposable things like paper plates , napkins , etc. and on articles of clothing ( T-shirts , shorts , sox, underwear) when the shape is identifiable as a U.S. Flag. That hasn't stopped folks from doing and selling that .
Sometimes Freedom of Speech and expression has a downside.
Should the flag be flown as high on a pole as it will go, or is it okay to regularly leave it 8" below the top?
