How to Properly Display the American Flag

Hi, Dale: Almost all temporary displays of this type (and others) run afoul of the Flag Code in one way or another—or more than one way. As you suspect, illumination is often a problem. In cases such as this, it's important to fall back on the old adage that it's the thought that counts, as well as on the tried-and-true fallback of "Flying the Stars and Stripes incorrectly [in most cases] is better than not flying them at all." So, we say say "Go for it!" Thanks for being so patriotic to ask!
Hi, Mendle: Old Glory should be flown at half-mast only by decree of the president or a governor (or for a few other specific reasons). As you can imagine, if everyone everywhere started flying her at half-mast for whatever perfectly good reason they might have, on any given day in America there could literally be millions of Stars and Stripes at half-mast for millions of different reasons—which would take away the specialness of the (usually) nationwide decrees for which the practice is now reserved. This being said, observance of the Flag Code is strictly voluntary, and what anyone does with Old Glory and how they do it is totally protected by Freedom of Speech. Thanks for being so patriotic to ask!

Hi, Sharon: Yes, you really should, but if you don't, we'll never tell. Thanks for caring so much to ask!
