How to Properly Display the American Flag

Hi, Michael: Not only would it be disrespectful to fly Old Glory upside down for this purpose, but also it could be dangerously misleading. Flying her upside down means more than "in distress": It means "S.O.S.!!! Emergency!!! Send help immediately!!!" Thus when you see it on a ship at sea (as we have) or high on a mountaintop (from a plane) or even every so often elsewhere when someone in danger in some way has been able to get to a flag and surreptitiously display it upside down, it is important to initiate immediate rescue action. As you can imagine, if everyone who felt that the country was in distress started flying their flags upside down, this could lead to real confusion and the eventual possible ignoring of people who really were in personal distress. So, it's best not to do this. Thanks for being so patriotic to ask!
Hi, Bob: Not really, although usually such flagpoles are often centered in some way along a side, or perhaps placed in a prominent corner, or perhaps put on the highest ground. In other words, any placement other than just random always seems to work out OK. Thanks for caring so much to ask!
Hi, Stewart: Yes, when Old Glory is flown at half-mast, other associated flags should also be lowered accordingly or else temporarily taken down if it would seem that the entities represented by the other flags would not be in agreement with the reason for Old Glory being at half-mast. For example, it is generally assumed that state flags are "in agreement" with Old Glory. However, in this case, no one in Ottawa may have ordered the Maple Leaf to fly at half-mast, so it would be a little presumptive (not to mention insulting) for someone in the U.S. just to automatically do so. Thus it would temporarily be taken down. Sometimes, though—such as perhaps upon the death of a well-respected world leader of some sort—there are simultaneous cross-border periods of mourning, in which case it would be OK for the Maple Leaf to fly at half-mast. Thanks for asking!

Hi, Mark: No, without an official decree, it is not appropriate to fly Old Glory at half-staff in honor of a veteran's funeral service—but if this should ever happen, we'll never tell. Thanks for asking!
