How to Properly Display the American Flag

Hi, Pam: This is a little complicated, but, basically: No, it is not appropriate. Old Glory should not be worn as clothing. So this would mean that if you are wrapping yourself in Old Glory to use as a shawl to keep warm, that's a no-go ... but then again, we don't want anybody to be cold, do we? And if someone is temporarily wrapped in her in celebration of their nation, is this all that bad? When you cut up Old Glory—which you really shouldn't do—she is no longer Old Glory but just some pieces of fabric, so that's not really in the same category. And overriding all of this is Freedom of Speech, which allows us to do virtually anything to/with Old Glory. So, it's complicated. But the bottom line is that using Old Glory as clothing or making clothing out of her is definitely in bad taste. On that, we can all agree. Thanks for being so patriotic to ask!

Hi, Tommie: You are correct—Old Glory should be flown at half-staff only at the direction of the president or a governor or under certain other conditions (e.g., Memorial Day). In this case, though, the president did indeed issue such a directive to honor the Nashville victims. Thanks for asking!
