How to Properly Display the American Flag

Hi, Cheryl: Yes, civilians should stand facing Old Glory, with their hand over their heart. Headwear should be removed and also held with hand over heart, meaning that the headwear is somewhat at the shoulder. Service members in uniform salute. Service members and veterans not in uniform may also choose to salute. Thanks for being so patriotic to ask!
Hi, Robert: An Old Glory with all gold stars is simply one that has been embellished, as is done with gold fringe sometimes. Whether "all gold stars" is proper may be another matter, but we're not going to make a fuss over it. Another situation can arise according to a tradition started in WWI, which was that for every service member in your family, you replaced a white star with a blue one. If such a service member died in action, then the blue star would be replaced by a gold one. Hence the gold stars that we unfortunately see on homes, for example. So, if you were to see an Old Glory with only one or a few gold stars in its blue union field, this would be an indication of family members lost in service. Thanks for caring so much to ask!
