How to Properly Display the American Flag

Hi, Holly: In general, half-mast is considered to be achieved when the top of Old Glory is at the midpoint of the pole. However, you are correct in your recollection. There are two other possibilities that sometimes occur: (1) the top of the flag is lowered a distance equal to its width ("hoist"), as you suggest, and (2) the midpoint of the flag sits at the midpoint of the pole (slightly higher than the first example above). Any one of these works, as indeed this is a case of "it's the thought that counts," but the first example is preferred. Thanks for this great question!
Hi, Craig: Everything on Almanac.com is copyrighted, including those parts of Flag Guidelines that are not taken directly from the U.S. Flag Code (which are in the public domain). However, you and everyone else certainly have permission to copy from our Flag Guidelines as long as you give credit to The Old Farmer's Almanac. Thanks for asking!

Hi, Stan: First of all, thank you so much for your service! It is perfectly OK to do this. Ironically, Old Glory stands for (among many other things) the very Freedom of Speech that allows anything to be flown beneath her—or above her, for that matter. Thanks for being so patriotic to ask!
