How to Properly Display the American Flag
More Like This
Hi, Loren: If you are referring to a number of flags flown on separate poles side-by-side, we would assume that Old Glory would be in her best position for proper respect according to the rules of flag etiquette. If this is true, then all flags could be lowered to true half-staff and Old Glory would retain her position of prominence, even when at half-staff. So, no, she need not be flown higher is she is properly positioned to begin with. Thanks for asking!
Hi, Robert: The half-staff declaration currently in effect expires at sunset on Saturday, May 28, at which point Old Glory would be raised to full staff if lit or raised to full staff before being taken down if not lit. Old Glory would then fly at full staff (as appropriate to lighting) on Sunday, May 29, and until sunrise on Memorial Day, May 30, at which point she would be lowered to half-staff again. She would then be briskly raised to full staff at 12:00 noon on that day and remain so, as appropriate, going forward. Thanks for this great question!
Hi, Tish: If it is on a staff and cannot be lowered, then yes, it should be taken down. The other alternative, though, is to leave it up and fly a black streamer or ribbon from the tip of the staff. This is also perfectly acceptable and certainly more meaningful. Thanks for caring so much to ask!
