How to Properly Display the American Flag

Hi, Judy: "Stick flags" sort of fall into the netherworld of Old Glory etiquette. They have matured past the stage of those tiny ones that you might put on a cake that are treated like common tchotchkes most of the time, yet they have not yet grown up enough to be full-fledged adult flags subject to full-fledged adult flag etiquette. Common sense should prevail here: Make sure that the flags are not touching the ground. Keep an eye out for them, just as Old Glory has kept an eye out for us over the centuries. Don't let them get all tilted over. While it's not possible to be running outside every time a cloud is in the sky, consider taking them in before a heavy downpour or period of sustained rain. (Don't tell anybody, but folks have been known to keep a big freezer or other plastic bag in the back of their mailbox for temporarily storing a rolled up stick flag during inclement weather. Of course, rolling up an Old Glory of any size is in and of itself a corner-cutting.) And ... please don't leave them up forever at the mercy of darkness and the elements. Stick flags are meant for special purposes, not as permanent installations. Sounds like you have a nice custom. Thanks for being so patriotic to ask about it!
Hi, LB: Actually, either way is OK in practice, as it would just be inferred that Californians, as a subset of Americans, would also wish to show their concomitant respect to whatever. Obviously, though, it doesn't work the other way around, such that CA would drag down Old Glory if CA only were ordered to half-staff or CA would fly at half-staff while Old Glory would remain at full-. Thanks for caring so much to ask!

Hi, Dale: Thank you for taking the time to try to research this topic yourself. Your conclusion is correct. Where there are no other flags involved, either side of the lawn is OK as long as the presentation is respectful and, hopefully, as you say, prominent. Thanks again, and also for being so patriotic to ask!
