Frequently Asked Questions
-
Do we gain or lose an hour during Daylight Saving Time?
When Daylight Saving Time starts in spring, we set the clocks forward and lose an hour. When it ends in fall, we set the clocks back and gain an hour. -
What time do the clocks change?
Clocks change at 2:00 A.M. local time in most of the United States, a time when few people are working, traveling, or doing business. -
Will my phone change automatically for Daylight Saving Time?
Most smartphones, computers, and other devices that are connected to the internet update themselves if you have them set to update date, time, and time zone automatically. You might still need to change the time by hand on things like appliances, cars, or wall clocks. -
Does Canada change clocks on the same day as the United States?
Some parts of Canada still change their clocks on the same schedule as the United States. However, provinces and territories set their own time rules, and several of them stopped changing clocks in 2026.
British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, and the Northwest Territories will not turn their clocks back on November 1, 2026. Yukon and Saskatchewan also use one time year-round.
Other parts of Canada, including most of Ontario and Quebec and the Atlantic provinces, continue to observe seasonal time changes.

I would love Standard Time (nature's real-time) to remain year-round. Farmers still do NOT like DST. I think it is hard for children going to school in the dark. Young children need not be up well after 9 pm (Central time here), which makes it harder for their parents.
Re DST: I dread the loss of DST. Nightfall so early limits me terribly in ability to enjoy outdoors. Coming home in the dark is depressing.
As a physician, I am well aware that Seasonal Affective Disorder is real, adversely affecting many.
If we are so concerned about energy, let us remember why DST was implemented in the first place. I do hope DST will be adopted as permanent despite special interest groups who oppose it.
Special interest groups? I wouldn’t call millions of Americans who favor Standard Time special interest groups.
Standard Time is Mother Nature’s time, the correct time. I follow Mother Nature.
Please! Just leave the time a lone. It is hard on everyone to keep changing it. They should leave it on " Standard Time" and keep it there. I thought there was going to be a vote to keep the time one way and leave it there?
An overwhelming number CAnadians and I'd say Americans think changing the clock is absolute BS.
Set the clocks on Standard time PERMANENTLY. Noon is when the sun is at its highest point regardless of the day, month, or season. Whoever wants to get out of work an hour early, talk to your boss about coming to work an hour early. I remember the 1970s when I had to supervise the children at the bus stop because it was pitch black out and the traffic on our street consisted of speeding drivers on their way to work. I dread going back to that. The stats showed that it didn't save on energy - quite the opposite.
Yes. Standard time all the time.
I absolutely agree that DST doesn’t do a thing for any of us! Why would we want to give our kids an extra hour of sunlight (per the clock) for sports, aren’t our youth over stimulated enough. Shouldn’t we all try and have a nice evening instead of running around like ants. What about those who have a legit sun dial….just put our clocks on standard time and leave them!
I prefer we return permanently to GREENWICH MEAN TIME. "Greenwich Mean Time is the yearly average (or 'mean') of the time each day when the Sun crosses the Prime Meridian at the Royal Observatory Greenwich. Essentially, mean time is clock time rather than solar (astronomical) time." Greenwich Mean Time was established in 1884 and was the INTERNATIONAL STANDARD for TIME. "As the reference for GMT, the Prime Meridian at Greenwich therefore became the centre of world time and the basis for the global system of time zones." DON'T MESS WITH TIME!!!
