How to Properly Display the American Flag

Hi, Peggy: Yay, KOA! We assume that you are referring to a straight line of flagpoles of the same height roughly parallel to the building. If such is the case, then Old Glory would be to the left as you faced the building, Canada in the middle, and KOA on the right. If the center pole were higher or more prominent (slightly farther away from the building, forming a V), then Old Glory would be in the middle, Canada on the left, and KOA again on the right—again, when seen from the "street." Thanks for caring so much to ask!
Hi, Melissa: Well, sometimes we just need to do the best we can with regard to flying a staff-mounted Old Glory at half-staff. The proper way is to temporarily attach a black or dark purple streamer to the top of the staff. This doesn't have to be anything fancy, and "homemade" is perfectly fine—although it shouldn't be, for example, a black towel. Option #2 is to do nothing. Option #3 would be to move her backstage—although we always say that an Old Glory displayed improperly is usually better than no Old Glory displayed at all. Thanks for being so patriotic to ask!
Hi, Bonnie: We are very grateful to your brother for his service! What you have here—which is called a "streamer" or "battle streamer"—is meant to be attached to the top of the flagstaff of a naval unit, such that it hangs down (or flies) alongside Old Glory. The armed services have different ways of doing this, but for the navy, there is usually one streamer (not physically, but in terms of design) for each war or long-term related series of operations. Significant battles or engagements are represented by the stars. A bronze star indicates one battle; a silver star equals five bronze stars. So, you can tell by the number and color of your stars just how many battles or significant operations/deployments this streamer represents. Thanks for being so patriotic to ask!

Hi, Ryan: While from a technical standpoint Freedom of Speech allows us to use flag patches wherever and however we want, putting them on athletic jerseys would really be frowned upon, as such use usually is reserved for the armed forces and some first responders. On the other hand, flag stickers are "good to go" anywhere. Thanks for caring so much to ask!
