I often see athletes drape the American Flag over their shoulders and back, holding an end in each hand. Sometimes taking another lap around the track, etc. Is this appropriate. I have an off feeling about it each and every time. It looks like it is being used as a garment. If they want to take that victory lap, I think they should have a smaller flag on it's own staff, appropriately sized for the athlete to carry in celebration.
Hi, Nancy: You are correct in thinking that using the flag like an article of clothing is inappropriate. At the same time, when seeing such a practice, we try to refrain from condemning in our hearts in favor of joining the spirit of celebration and assuming that often in the spur of the moment, it's the thought that counts. Thanks for asking!
I recall a flag rule that said no more than one US flag is to be displayed in a room at a time. This was done to separate our use of the flag from the Nazi's ubiquitous use of the Swastika during WW II. Ever since 9-11 this rule has been flouted and I can no longer find the rule. What gives?
As of April 10th, 2020, Michigan’s Gov. Whitmer ordered all U.S. and Michigan Flags to fly at half-staff for those people who passed away from the Coronavirus and will be flown indefinitely. I don’t think that’s right because it violates the U.S Flag Code. She is NOT the President who is able to provide us with a proclamation for when the Flag can be flown at different times than those specific times as noted in the U.S Flag Code.
