How to Properly Display the American Flag

Hi, Gloria: Thanks for this great question! It's fine for students to touch Old Glory respectfully, and in fact the more we can encourage young people not only to revere and cherish Old Glory, but also to understand that she is indeed a part of their everyday lives, the better off our great nation will be! Thanks again!
Hi, Donna: It is OK to crochet/knit Old Glory, but only for use as a real flag (which would not seem to be very practical). However, if it had a border, for example, then it wouldn't be a true U.S. flag and would be OK to wear or use for a blanket (although perhaps of questionable taste). Clothing with a flag image is again of questionable taste, but it is perfectly permissible as "flag art," which is protected under Freedom of Speech. Thanks for being so patriotic to ask!

Hi, David: By custom, flags sewn on the upper right arm are often reversed such that the union (blue with stars) is in the upper right, representing how a flag would look if it were being carried forward, such as into battle. Flags on the upper left arm would continue to have the union at the upper left. Thanks for caring so much to ask!
