How to Properly Display the American Flag
More Like This
Hi, My friend was provided a Garrison flag that has been present at many honorable events in its history and asked if he would display it in his store. As you know the garrison flag is no small item. He reached out to me to see if there is any way he can display it knowing he has height restrictions in his story (not tall enough). He can hang it horizontal but it comes to within 3 feet and provides ample room for those to touch, which he'd like to avoid. I had 2 thoughts for him, 1 i know is good (simply fold and present folded), the other I'm not very sure about. I know your not to drape a flag over anything but if it was say hung from the ceiling and then supported mid way down to create additional lift, would that be ok?.
I work for two different high schools. Both have JROTC. Both schools want national colors on field flag pole as well as cadets presenting colors in the center of the field for national anthem. Confusing part is some people aren't sure which to honor. I can't seem to find any information about two U S flags in same location. I don't think it's proper etiquette but the administration wants this. Any help would be appreciated!
Hi, Fred: It's fine to have both. If you are asking toward which Old Glory people should look during the national anthem, it would be to the higher one, no doubt the field pole. The field colors would be presented "to" (facing) the field pole, so as to honor it in that way, by pointing toward it. Thanks for asking!
I found a brand New flag with box that must have fallen from a vehicle. The flag was on the road outside of the box. Does it need to be destroyed? There's only 1 mark from the road.
I hang an American Flag on our door every Memorial Day and Veteran's Day and Flag Day, etc.. Wondering...Is it proper to put flowers above it? I'm thinking nothing is suppose to be above our flag. Does anyone know?
I am making a crocheted blanket flag that is identical to the flag. I got the pattern off Pinterest. The flag will be given to a veterans family who has passed during a ceremony at the VA hospital. Some wonder if the blanket is inappropriate, as in what if the family use it as a blanket and wrap up in it or what if it touches the floor since it’s in their house. Is this blanket considered a flag? I know in the code above it says to not be disrespectful to the flag or it’s likeness.
I’m going to show my blanket to a large group of people and there will even be a news story about the the patriotic blankets we are making. I don’t want to show this flag blanket one and have anyone offended, plus I would never want to disrespect our flag.
Hi, Frances: Thank you for this question and for being so patriotic! If this were a flag that was made to be flown and people wrapped themselves in it as they would in a blanket, then this would be wrong. But, as you say, it is a blanket, not meant to be flown, so using it for its intended use is not wrong. Ironically, flying it as a flag would also be OK. Thank you again for everything!
