How to Properly Display the American Flag

When our National Anthem is played during a sporting event, everyone should face the flag suspended from the rafters above the, in this case, basketball court. Sometimes there is a color guard that makes an appearance and has an American flag on a staff. Which flag do your face, the higher flag, or the lower, but staffed flag?
The flag is supposed to be treated with respect. In my opinion, it is absolutely disgusting for any person let alone a president to drape themselves around the flag and mug for the cameras. The American flag stands for our country. It does not stand for our president.
The president is already the center of attention on the stage or or at the podium. With this action (stunt) he is literally covering the flag with his body - effectively redirecting any loyalty or honor shown to our standard onto himself. It is an immature and disrespectful display.
I assume you are speaking of when President Trump came on stage and HUGGED the flag. I saw it as a profound sign of respect for our flag and our country. I have seen people kiss the flag. As a child I hugged the flag that was on my father's coffin. President Trump is very patriotic, loves our country, and absolutely loves and respects our flag. I saw the clip, he did not "drape" the flag over himself, he showed respect by hugging the flag. Respectfully submitted.
Is it ok to make a quilt using an American flag?
I’m sure you’re just trying to show your patriotism. I respect the fact that you were respectful enough to search for proper flag etiquette.
But to answer your question, American flag etiquette and according to the U.S flag code. No it is not ok to make a quilt using the American Flag. There are other ways to properly disply indoors or out.
But as stated above:
-The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose, nor embroidered on cushions or handkerchiefs, printed on paper napkins or boxes, nor used as any portion of a costume.
-The flag should never have anything placed on it.
-The flag should never be displayed flat, whether indoors or out.
-The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored so that it might be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.
-The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.
If the quilt has already been made there are drop of boxes by the Boy Scouts Of America at certin locations. Also you can contact your local American Legeion. So it can be destroyed in a dignified and ceremonious fashion, preferably by burning.
I understand the rule for not using an actual flag to make a quilt. My question, however, is it proper to actually crochet your own flag Afghan using all yarn and placing it on your couch?
Thanks for your guidance.
Diane
I have a neighbor who puts up a flag, and then leaves it up until it is nothing but a bunch of faded strings flapping in the breeze. This has happened several times in my 20 years living here.I have told him how disrespectful it is,but he does not care.He took it down last time only after he saw my wife taking a picture of it to post on twitter. Is there anything you can send him in the mail to maybe convince him that it is very disrespectful .

Hi, Diane: "Flag art" is protected under the First Amendment and takes many forms, indeed! Thanks for asking!
