How to Properly Display the American Flag

Why do we see the flag being used in unappropriate ways such as umbrellas, napkins, paper plates and such.
I cringe every time the president of the United States of America hugs the flag at his political events. Is this proper treatment of our American flag??? I find it unpatriotic and creepy. Thanks for taking my question.
As in my previous comment, I do not find it inappropriate or "creepy". President Trump respects the flag, loves this country, and hugs the flag. I have seen people kiss the flag. I find it a lighthearted moment, a sign of respect, and charming.
Is it appropriate for the US flag to be hugged by an individual in public, photographed and distributed globally, then used for political gain?
I thought we were to respect the flag by hand over heart and soldiers salute. I like your explanation though that 45’s attempt of hugging the flag is a lame way and a childish way!
So, is hugging an American flag displayed at a presidential rally by said president to excite the crowd before badmouthing every branch and twigs of the government an illegal offense?
Im wondering about if the president or anybody hug the flag in public ?
Hi, Heather and all of our other concerned friends below: It is perfectly OK for anyone, anywhere, to temporarily hug Old Glory, as long as this is done in a respectful manner. In fact, countless Americans over the centuries have given life and limb to protect our freedom of speech (which is what this is), which includes the right to do this. Thank you all so very, very much for being so patriotic to care so much!
Hugging the American Flag is wrong.

Hi, Don: It would not really be proper to do what you describe. It's pretty complicated, but if all flags are the same height, Old Glory should not be in back, which is the inferior position. The order of priority here is Old Glory, state, Canada. If they are all the same height, then, as you face them, Old Glory would be on the left front, state on the right front, and Canada in back (no disrespect meant, Canadian friends!!!) in "third place." An easy workaround here could be to put Old Glory in back, as you suggest, but then lower both state and Canada on their poles by just a tad to make them lower, in which case (lower) state would be on the viewer's left front and (lower) Canada on the right front. Whew! We need to sit down and take a rest. Wait. We are sitting down. Thanks for asking!
