How to Properly Display the American Flag

Hi, Dan: First of all, thank you for your service! And thanks for this great question. While we can't see the flags, we can go online and see the light poles in the lot. To us, it would not seem that these Old Glories would be at their best below the light fixtures. It's important to remember that sometimes a method of display can be technically OK, but at the same time demean or diminish the importance of our flag because it is placed in a context that shifts or dilutes focus away from Old Glory itself. At the same time, it's important to remember that this dealership is just trying to make some money the good, old-fashioned way and incorporate a whole bunch of patriotism as well—so we can't really fault their good intentions. This may be another case of "it's the thought that counts" and a situation that would require us to remember that it is better to have Old Glories being flown non-optimally, albeit respectfully, than it is to have Old Glories not being flown at all. But your information is correct and your heart is certainly in the right place, not surprisingly. Well, almost correct: The only things higher than the flag are the truck (the fixture that caps the pole, holds the pulley, and serves as the base for the finial) and the finial itself (e.g., gold eagle or ball), which sits on the truck. But thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, insight, and instinct—we really appreciate it!
Hi, Morgan: How nice of you! Thank you! Yes, it's OK to mail, as long as it is protected properly. For example, you would want it to be inside plastic in some way, in case the parcel ended up being left in the rain or snow. Also, in a perfect world, the flag would be folded into its proper triangular shape, but if your flag is not and is in its original packing/bag/whatever, we'll never tell if you don't refold it. Thank you for being so patriotic, not to mention kind!

Hi, Peggie: If you are talking about 2 flags on flagpoles, then what is usually done is to either lower the other (Canadian), too (although this is not preferable, since it is not their flag that is in mourning), or else just not fly the second flag for the duration. Thanks for asking!
