How to Properly Display the American Flag
More Like This
Hi, Mike: There are some basic rules that apply to all Flag Lines. If possible, members of the line should assemble elsewhere and march in as a unit, not mill around and try to get into position. The line should be straight. Members should be dressed appropriately and not be performing any other duty or function. No smoking, drinking, snacking, or cell phone use. Members should stand comfortably apart so that the staff of Old Glory, which is held in the left hand, can be held perfectly straight up and be allowed to hang freely without touching the next person. Military commands apply, i.e., when "Taps" is played or the casket is moved, the line is called to Attention. Those in the military and veterans render the salute; others in the line put their right hand over their heart. The default command for the Line is the "At Ease" position, but not in a sloppy manner. If a line member needs to leave for any reason, he/she quietly hands their Old Glory staff to the person next to them, does an About Face, and exits across the back of the formation. Thanks for asking and for doing this!
