How to Properly Display the American Flag
More Like This
Yes, the American flag is always on its own right. Therefore it should be the leftmost flag, as seen from the street in front of the house.
Is it proper to light a flag on a pole from above the flag instead of from below it?
Thank you.
The American Legion provides the interpretation of proper illumination of our Flag. It gives no specification as to lighting placement only that the lighting utilized would specifically illuminate our Flag. They also provide that no additional illumination is required should the placement of our Flag be co-located in a lit area that would light our Flag as to be fully visible to a passerby. My home is located on the corner of two streets with a tall corner street light opposite my corner, 40 feet away from where my Flag is mounted 9 feet up on my 4x4" corner fence post. My Flag is fully lit and visible therefore, in compliance with proper illumination guidelines. In my 64 years I've not seen the use of one light positioned directly above our Flag. Personally, I wouldn't think that this method could provide effective lighting. This is the reason lighting is not at the base of a flagpole directly under our Flag unless there are additional lights placed either side of the pole. One light is normally positioned out from and to the front of the pole. Until I moved the location of my Flag, I used a small inexpensive Pernee LED dusk-to-dawn solar spotlight with ground stake. Worked great.
I'm a former Jarhead, ooh-rah!
I want to hang Old Glory and my Marine Corps flag, on separate staffs on the side of my house. As I'm on the street, facing the house, should my Marine Corps flag be on the left or right of The Stars and Stripes?

Craig - First off I want to thank you for you service!
When facing your house from the street the American flag should always be to the left.
God Bless America
Phil, you are very welcome.
Thank you for your support, Sir.

Firstly, there are no Former Jar Heads. We fortunate ones just grow older and a little fatter.
Now to the seriousness, our Eagle, Globe and Anchor would be to the right of ole glory as viewed from the street. And I will add, flown from a shorter staff. Oohrah Devil
I work in a fabric shop, and we have fabrics with small US flags printed on them, and fabrics with "wavy" red & white stripes, and "wavy" blue fields with stars on them, and other fabrics with similar variations of the flag. Mostly, these fabrics tend to be made into tote bags, quilts (including Quilts of Valor™), place mats, etc. Is this an improper display of the flag? I have always felt that it is never wrong to show my patriotism by using these fabrics in my projects.
Thanks.
