How to Properly Display the American Flag

Hi, Rooster: Old Glory should be retired through respectful burning when she has become irreparably torn, soiled, or otherwise bedraggled. How to determine this is left up to the beholder, but the question to ask is, "If she were a person, would she be proud to be looking like she does?" Thanks for caring so much to ask!
Hi, Jonathan: Don't worry—you are in the clear! On the one hand, it is improper to alter Old Glory in any way. On the other, once you do, she is no longer Old Glory but flag art, which is protected by Freedom of Speech. You could have a Blue Line flag, for example, but you would not be able to pledge allegiance to it, as it is not the Stars and Stripes—you would just be pledging allegiance to a piece of art. So, a Blue Line flag is not improper—it's just not Old Glory. Ironically, then, Old Glory stands for the very same freedoms that allow anyone to make her not Old Glory anymore. Thanks for being so patriotic to ask!
Hi, Karen: We believe that you are referring to ceremonial bunting with a Stars and Stripes theme, in which case, no, there is no special way. Of course, such disposal should be done as respectfully as possible, given the nature of the material, but a ceremonial burning such as is done with a worn out Old Glory herself is not necessary. Thanks for asking!
