How to Properly Display the American Flag

Hi, Patricia: Freedom of Speech allows anyone to fly any flag below Old Glory (or above it, for that matter) at any time. As a practical matter, no permission is required by law by anyone for the two examples you give, although there certainly may be local rules or customs with regard to who needs permission or what is allowed on any given flagpole. Thanks for being so patriotic to ask!
Hi, Leon: Freedom of Speech protects the flying of any flags from any vehicles in any way, so doing so with Old Glory is fine—although she should always be on the passenger side. Old Glory also should be replaced if bedraggled, not flown. What is done with other flags is a matter of common sense and good taste, which sometimes are sorely lacking. Thanks for caring so much to ask!

Hi, Douglas: On the left sleeve, the blue union should be to the left as usual. On the right sleeve, it should be to the right (although the normal orientation is also acceptable on the right sleeve). These placements of the union are meant to represent how Old Glory would look if she were blowing backward in the wind while being carried or charged into battle or action. Thanks for caring so much to ask!
