How to Properly Display the American Flag

Hi, Frank: First of all, thank you so much for your service! You are correct—this is very disrespectful. Your course of action is to report this to the postmaster of that PO until corrective action is taken. If you cannot get any satisfaction (it's important to remember that sometimes these things are budgetary in nature), your next step would be to contact your U.S. Representative and Senators, who would then contact your postal district higher-ups. Out of respect for the privacy of our commenters here, we do not capture people's email addresses, so we're afraid this response will have to do in lieu of an email. Thanks for being so patriotic to ask!
Hi, Phil: Please pass along our condolences to your community. Unfortunately, it would not be appropriate to fly Old Glory at half-staff for this purpose. The reason for discouraging such an honor—however deserved and desired, as is obviously the case here—is that, as you can imagine, if this were encouraged, on every day in America millions of flags might be at half-staff for different reasons, which would dilute the whole meaning of the practice for everyone. Hence it is reserved for national and state (and a few other specialized) observances. Thanks for caring so much to ask!

Hi, Claude: During the normal course of a meeting, no special measures are required by anyone when passing in front of Old Glory. It is usually the other way around, when military members salute as Old Glory passes in front of them. Thanks for caring so much to ask!
