How to Properly Display the American Flag

Hi, David: Just as a tangential comment, we are a little flummoxed by the description but will just assume that you are referring to a semicircle of flags. If such is the case and Old Glory is tallest, then, yes, she can be in the center. Alternatively, she also could be at the far left as you faced into the semicircle, which is where she would be required to be if all of the poles were the same height. But center is fine, it sounds like. Good luck with your memorial (thanks for doing it!) and thanks for being so patriotic to ask!
Hi, Pam: This is one of those interesting situations in which everybody has good intentions yet somehow end up at crossed purposes. First of all, is it OK to have a flag in front of a church? Of course, as long as it does not appear to be representing the church or indicating that the church is some sort of government entity. After all, one of the beauties of our democracy is that while it was founded with an eye toward God ("In God We Trust," "... endowed by Our Creator with certain inalienable rights," etc.), at the same time it has always enforced and protected the separation of church and state in citizens' daily lives and zealously guarded their right to believe in whatever or whoever they chose—or nothing at all. In the case of your LFL (thanks for doing that!), your Old Glory is meant to symbolize general patriotism, that's all (we presume), yet in some ways it would appear that Old Glory were representing the LFL. Is this OK? Sure. Would it be OK to rotate out flags? Again, sure. But allow us to suggest that the issue be refocused on the purpose of the LFL itself—reading—rather on the flag or flags that are allowable (any is) or best. It would seem to us that the solution here would be to find a way to have 2 or 3 or 4 flags at your LFL, rotating if necessary, that represent not countries but some of the authors of the books inside, to remind borrowers of the richness of reading. Then everyone might be able to have the best of all worlds. Thanks for caring so much to ask!
