How to Properly Display the American Flag
More Like This
Hi, Alan: Your member is correct in observing that Old Glory should not be dipped. Doing so with other flags such as military, state, etc., as a sign of deference or respect (when passing in review, for example) is common practice, but the Stars and Stripes remain aloft. Thanks for being so patriotic to ask!
Hi, B.: This is hard to evaluate without actually seeing, but, yes, Old Glory is meant to "fly free"—that is, to flap fully, unencumbered, in whatever wind there happens to be. From this, it follows that on a vertical standard (or stand or stick or pole), she should "drape free"—that is, her "hoist" (short measurement, or height) should be attached to the pole in two places and then her other two corners should be pulled out, dropped, and allowed to fall and fold and drape however they end up. It almost sounds as though here she may be attached only at the top; if so, the solution is the second attachment mentioned above. Thanks for caring so much to ask!
