This is true! Ants are important pollinators for many ephemeral flowers!
Thank you for that information! I am planning my very first perennial flower garden for next year, and peonies are first on my list! I did not know about the ants. I have actually never gardened before, so wish me luck!
I live in zone 6 in new york, cone flowers are impossible to grow and my black-eyed susans get black spots on the leaves no matter what I spray with. So I don't think these two are so easy to grow.
Echinacea (coneflowers) are more of a Midwestern and Upper South perennial. It will grow in New York, but needs at least 6 to 8 hours of full sun. It wants average, neutral to slightly alkaline soil and does not thrive if over watered or in too moist conditions. They do best with no more than an inch of water a week. They are drought tolerant once established, so allow the soil to dry out before watering, about an inch of water a week during the hottest part of summer, and avoid watering the foliage and water the base of the plant. Does not need regular fertilizing. Fertilizer will result in lush foliage with fewer flowers. They will benefit from some compost worked into the soil when planting. Top dress every year with a scant shovelful of compost and scratch in. Divide every three to four years and space the plants about eighteen inches to two feet apart. Other fungal diseases may attack the plant. Proper spacing and watering will help.
Aster yellows is an insect-born problem spread by the aster leafhopper. Flowers become distorted and leaf veining becomes yellow. There is no cure and do not replant any aster, coneflower, or members of the aster family in the same location. Dig up the plants and do not compost. Bag them up and trash them. If planted too closely, they can develop powdery mildew. There are fungicides which can be used. Neem oil for any Japanese Beetles.
Typically, coneflowers are rock solid and rarely affected with diseases or poor growth. Site location, well-draining soil and non-acidic soil, and proper spacing usually results in vigorous, thriving plants.
Excellent website for advice on all aspects of planting, caring and identifying different species of flowers.
Many people don't like the sugar ants. Sadly without them peonies cannot bloom. They are necessary for removing the wax that surrounds the bud. Best to plant this beauty away from your house.
Anyone who has peonies to give away is my friend, at least in that department! I had some rosy pink ones but when we moved, couldn't take them. I really miss the fragrance. Do they grow well in Northern Arkansas?
I have a large area covered with black eyed susans. Your correct they will take over. One year rabbits helped slow the spread. However b i s and coneflowers are the favorite food of 4 pair of american Gold finch that live in my yard.
