Looking for a traditional chicken salad recipe? Sometimes the classic recipe is best, especially in a sandwich. Our recipe has just four ingredients: chicken, mayonnaise, lemon juice, and crunchy celery.
This basic chicken salad recipe can be adapted to your style, too. We like to add one teaspoon dijon mustard for a little more kick.
- Want more crunch? Add extra celery. We also like to chop up one green onion for crunch and flavor.
- Other popular add-ins include: nuts (almonds, pecans), fruit (grapes, dried cranberries), eggs, and dill.
For the chicken, we advise either poaching or baking chicken breasts or thighs.

Classic Chicken Salad
In a small bowl, mix all of the ingredients together. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Optional: Refrigerate for an hour if possible.
Serve as a sandwich or over greens. Or, enjoy with crackers as a snack!
Note: Do not leave mayo dishes at room temperature over two hours. Refrigerated up to 4 days, wrapped tightly with plastic wrap.
